Col Hortman was well liked and respected by all the troops in Avionics.  Was soft spoken, but could "chew" butt with the best.  You could not go away from one of those "chewing outs" and not respect and like him.  A great officer.

I remember Lt Col Hortman as one of the good guys who seemed to be genuinely interested in how his troops were doing.

He was a great officer tried several times to get me to re enlist and gave me the best orders anyone could ask for. Sure wish i had listen to him i loved the air force. Had to call the Col out a few times due to flight crews who loved Japan too much.

Lt. Col. Hortman was one of those officers who commanded respect just because of the type of man he was.Was always great to me even the time I got one of those famous "butt chewings".
