Col Gowans came the the 610th when his unit closed down at Tachikawa. He was formerly from AFLC and had never been assigned to a MAC unit. He served as the Chief of Maintenance replacing Major Casey Tibbs. He always amazed me with his remarkable ability to respond to difficult management situations. He was easy to talk to and was always available for advise. The advise he gave me helped me build a successful career as an aircraft maintenance officer. In my opinion, he was the greatest boss I ever worked for and the most professional.

I was Col Gowans Clerk from 1968 to 1972 when I rotated back state side. Col Gowans was one of the best people I worked for in the 26 years I was in the military. A real soldiers soldier.

I had no idea that he had passed until just now. 5/16/2011.  Makes me so sad.  I served as his Quality Control and Maintenance Control Officer.  At Wright Patterson when he made full Colonel I told everyone that I was his hit man, because I would have done anything for him.  He was a great friend and leader.
