I once had a navigator try to blame his radar for not picking up an ice storm and navigating the 141 directly into it. He claimed that the system was so weak that it didn't pick up the storm and the damage was the fault of a bad Apn-59 system. The front edge of the wings were beaten in by large hail and the radome had been sheered away leaving the bird looking like it had been to war. The navigator was preparing charges to be brought against the last mechanic to sign-off on the system (A typical cover thine own ploy probably advised by his crew). However, during repairs I noticed that the radar antenna was on full down tilt and the gears controling it were undamaged. After the Chief of Maintenance had a look for himself and conferred in private with the young lieutenant, all proceedings against any radar shop personnel suddenly stopped. Lieutenants and some Captains will never learn that those bars don't know as much as as a 15 to 20 year Sergeant.
